Lori Hacking's Husband Lied About Plans to Attend Medical School

Mark Hacking, the husband of a pregnant jogger missing since Monday, did not graduate from the University of Utah nor did he apply for medical school as he told friends and family, his father said Wednesday.
``We were of the impression that he had graduated from the University of Utah recently, and just found out a few minutes ago that he never applied to medical school in North Carolina,'' Douglas Hacking said.
A news conference intended to update the media on the search for Lori Hacking, 27, was scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, but the focus shifted from the search to Mark Hacking's academics when reports surfaced he was not enrolled in medical school.
Questions arose when the University of North Carolina on Wednesday said Mark Hacking had never applied for enrollment. According to the University of Utah, Mark Hacking was enrolled from spring 1999 to fall 2002. He was majoring in intermediate psychology, but he never graduated.
Family members were only informed by police prior to the news conference after The Associated Press reported the discrepancies.
``The police have been aware of that since yesterday and did not share that with us,'' Douglas Hacking said. ``It still doesn't necessarily answer the question, 'What has happened to Lori?'''
It was information police didn't think that the family needed to know, and may not mean anything, Salt Lake City Detective Dwayne Baird said.
``It only means he's not enrolled in medical school,'' Baird said.
``The message is that Lori is still missing,'' said her mother Thelma Soares, tears welling up in her eyes. ``We'll work the other stuff out later.''
Yellow tape marked ``Do Not Cross'' blocked the doorway of the Hackings' apartment, where he serves as the building manager. No one answered the door Wednesday afternoon, but a message on a dry erase board directed inquiries about Lori Hacking to another apartment. An unidentified man there said Hacking had not been there since his wife disappeared.
Lori Hacking apparently vanished Monday morning after she went to Memory Grove Park in City Creek Canyon to jog. Police have not named any suspects in the disappearance, but have taken items from the couple's apartment and impounded both their cars. Mark Hacking also has been interviewed by police.
While 1,200 people helped search for Lori Hacking on Tuesday, that was scaled back Wednesday as about 150 volunteers took fliers door-to-door.
The police department is calling the disappearance officially a missing person case with suspicious circumstances, Detective Kevin Joiner said. No one is being considered a suspect, but no one has been ruled out, he said.
Police also have removed items from the couple's apartment near the University of Utah. Neither Joiner nor Baird would say what, if anything, was taken from the apartment, but television news footage showed paper bags, boxes and a box spring being removed.
Police impounded a large trash bin, but Baird would not confirm reports that police were looking at a mattress found inside the bin. Neither spokesman would say where the bin was located, but Joiner said it was ``somewhere between Memory Grove and the apartment.''
Lori Hacking's parents said they assume she has been abducted and pleaded for her safe return on local and national news shows Wednesday.
``I can't understand why anyone would do this terrible, hurtful, evil thing to Lori,'' her father, Eraldo Soares, told KUTV. ``Please let her go. Lori, if you can hear this, please do everything you can to rid yourself of this evil person.''
Her mother, Thelma Soares, said they were trying to get Lori Hacking's face before the public, all over the country. ``We need to find her, and we need all the eyes we can get.''
Hacking left her Salt Lake home around daybreak Monday for a run. After she failed to show up at work later, her husband called police, Baird said.
Mark Hacking works the night shift at a psychiatric hospital and has said that he usually sleeps when his wife goes running. She normally returns home about 6:30 a.m. to shower and get ready for work. He said she normally would wake him up to drive her to work.
A witness told police Monday that she saw a woman matching Hacking's description stretching at the park's entrance between 5:50 and 6 a.m.
On Monday, Mark Hacking woke up later in the morning and learned she had not arrived for work.
Lori and Mark Hacking have been married almost five years. They learned last Thursday that she is five weeks pregnant.

Watch the news conference, something is up: http://kutv.com/home/He is in a mental ward since yesterday.He lied, he didn't even finish his undergraduate! The dogs didnt get her scent at the park either, they took a matress out of the church dumpster and the box spring from the house. I hope just to cover all areas, but i don't have a good feeling about this. Where did you read that he's in a mental ward? I missed that. I know he works at a psychiatric hospital but that all I've seen regarding hospital/mental wards. |

Just reported on Greta that Loris husband checked himself in to the mental institutuion that he works at. The dumpster that they took in to evidence is located by their home. Stated the bed was taken from their home, not box springs, bed.

Where did you read that he's in a mental ward? I missed that. I know he works at a psychiatric hospital but that all I've seen regarding hospital/mental wards.

What does any of this prove?That we all have things in our closet that we would just as soon noone knew.
Maybe they were just moving to get away from the family.Hard to say....lets hope they continue toinvestigate others as well as the hubby

You know....the really sad part is that she jogged on a daily basis exactly at the same time every morning. The predator has had plently of time to watch her park her car, watch her jogging route, her timing etc. Memory Grove has alot off steep hills making it impossible to escape from an attacker.
My suspisions are someone who can see her from the top of the grove. Perhaps a Capital employee whom would get to work early. And I hate to say this but I am picking up on a security guard, or a man dressed as one.
I know that area like the back of my hand.

"Lori rolls with the punches, but she was more of a big-city girl," Turner said. "She would have definitely preferred Washington, but Mark was more of a small-town guy." In the same discussion, Turner said, Lori Hacking expressed worry over being alone in Chapel Hill, saying she had not yet found a job and noting "that she wouldn't have any children to take care of." It's already started. Just changed the name of the suspect. They are not looking for Lori. They are researching every angle on husband. Whether it be true or not, here it comes. Leave it to the media. |

You know....the really sad part is that she jogged on a daily basis exactly at the same time every morning. The predator has had plently of time to watch her park her car, watch her jogging route, her timing etc. Memory Grove has alot off steep hills making it impossible to escape from an attacker.

I know that area like the back of my hand. You know that I have had the suspicion of a security guard or an imposter dressed like a security guard that would be out that early in the morning (also: during the Chandra Levy case). That would not arouse any suspicion to a jogger. The mere fact these murders are occurring in or near parks, with homeless nearby turns my blood cold. Would there be an airbase near that location? |

She normally jogged in the afternoon, this monday she went in the am because he was off and they wanted to go see a movie after she gott off work. he already contradicted himself, at first he said when she goes in the am on his off days he always goes with her, then he said when she jogs in the am on his off days she wakes him up after she gets back and he drives her to work. I'm not saying he did anything but for Christ's sake tell the truth to police. It's one thing to cover up an affair but another to tell major lies. |
